I am happy to have LJ Jamela Thomas with me today talking about her book "And I Trusted You" as well as a bit of herself too.
1. Before we start talking about your book, why don’t you tell everybody a little bit about yourself?
I’ve been writing for over 35 years, professionally for the last 20. I’ve been published in regional magazines and on websites. I enjoy fiction short stories the most, but I just love to write, it’s like air to me. I’ve been married for 27 years to a wonderful musician/photographer/videographer. I’m a mother, mother-in-law and grandmother. I volunteer time in my congregation and try to speak to women to encourage them whenever I can. Oh and I’m a publisher and business partner of AMB Industries.
2. Besides writing, what other things do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I enjoy cooking, crocheting, singing (amateur) and most of all, playing with my 1st grandchild.
3. What is your daily routine as far as when you have an idea for your story?
I jot down the idea, make a crude outline, then develop a character sketch. Once this is done, I start typing and I go back and edit after it’s all done…to avoid getting sidetracked. This is what works for me.
4. Where do you get your ideas from?
Things I see, pictures, snatches of conversation, a memory…pretty much anything.
5. Out of all of the stories you’ve written so far, what would be your favorite and why?
My favorite is a short story included in the And I Trusted You Collection called Because I Love You. I like this one the most because the abuser takes his own life after he takes his wife’s life. Unfortunately she realized that she needed to get away from him too late. That is a lesson for abused women all over the world.
6. Tell us something funny about yourself that not a lot of people know about?
I enjoy coloring, just lying on the floor with crayons (have to be Crayola) and a coloring book and it doesn’t matter what kind of coloring book.
7. Does any of the stories you’ve written based on real life experiences or basically just from imagination? All of them have some truth to them…at least a small part.
8. Does your ‘muse’ have a name and if so what is his/her name?
Yes, my husband’s name is Jaz.
9. What other genre besides the one you are writing about now would you like to venture into writing?
I would like to try sci-fi/horror.
10. Who are your favorite authors that are out now?
Of course my business partner Aija M. Butler, and one of the authors I published, Sandra Krajewski, Donna Hill, Kimothy Clark and too many more to name.
11. Who is your favorite female and male characters from your books and why?
Hmmm Favorite Male Character is someone I haven’t written yet. All of my males are a mixture of the men I know, from my father to my husband to ex-boyfriends. No one in particular. My Favorite female character is the same. But, so far, I like Teresa the best ….lol. She’s a fighter in more than one way and I can identify with that spirit.
12. What do you think is the hardest thing about being a writer?
Organizing all of the plots swimming around in my head is the first thing. But running a close 2nd is never being satisfied with anything I write.
13. What advice would you give someone who wants to start off being a writer?
Read and write as much as you can. Find what you like and just sit down and start. If you never do, then you never will.
14. If you hadn’t become a writer, what do you think you would be doing right now?
Probably doing graphic design.
15. What would be the perfect Romantic getaway?
A cruise (though I generally don’t like them), but I can’t be disturbed by technology, unless I want to and I can relax and do nothing, if that’s what I want to do.
Well now that we got the question and answer out of the way…..why don’t you tell us about your latest story you have out now?
And I Trusted You is a collection of contemporary romance short stories. The book has a theme of survival as it relates to women in relationships. There are 6 stories with everything from domestic abuse to another woman plotting to get your man. Here is the book description:
It takes a strong woman to survive, no matter what the trial. Remember, it’s temporary.
Denise married her high school sweetheart, but things have changed over the years. Or have they?
Leslie is committed to her family, but other people have their own ideas about her life. Wonder what they have planned?
Samantha has tried everything, now there is nothing left to do but let him know how she feels. Who will walk away?
Adrienne wants this man so bad she can taste it and she knows he wants her, too. She finally gets him, but can she keep him?
Jessica has always been self-sufficient, but did she put her trust in the wrong man?
Tasha loved her job and her boss loved her. How will she handle things with him and at home?
We can survive anything, from betrayal to violence as long as we are strong. Find your strength in one of these stories?
Because I Love You (And I Trusted You) (excerpt)
She pulled into the driveway and noticed the house was dark. Damon’s car was there so she figured he must be in the back of the house. She her key in the lock and turned it to the right. When the lock released, she opened the door and walked inside. She looked around and didn’t see any lights on, so she walked to the bedroom, thinking Damon must be taking a nap. When she opened the bedroom door, Damon was sitting on the bed in the dark. “What’s he doing?”
“Hi honey. Are you okay? All the lights are off.” She said walking past him to put her briefcase in the closet and kicking her shoes off at the same time.
Denise didn’t see the penetrating gaze of Damon’s light brown eyes. She began to change clothes, so she could cook dinner when Damon walked over to her and hugged her from behind. “Oh, he wants to makeup. Cool,” she thought. He pulled and dragged her backwards to the bed and threw her down. “I’m not into rough sex,” she thought.
“Damon! What are you doing? I have to cook dinner, unless you’re taking me out tonight.” She said breathlessly.
Damon never opened his mouth. Instead he jumped on the bed beside Denise and grabbed her by the throat with his right hand. He positioned himself across her, sitting on her chest and placed his left hand around her throat. Finally Denise, saw that he was not himself. She barely recognized his contorted features. He began squeezing harder and harder. Denise began to cough. Through the coughs she screamed as much as she could, “Damon, Stop! Please, Damon! Damon, it’s me, Denise! Please, Damon. Stop!”
She hit him with her fists anywhere she could, trying to get his attention. She squirmed until she could reach the lamp. She grasped it in her hand and swung with all of her strength toward Damon’s head. The corner of the lamp hit Damon on the shoulder. Denise continued to scream as much as she could. She swung the lamp again and hit Damon in the head. He released her neck with his right hand and grabbed his head. Denise struggled and freed herself. She rolled over onto the floor as Damon held his head. Denise could see the blood coming from where she had hit him. She stumbled to the living room and grabbed her keys and her purse. She opened the door and ran to her car as fast as she could. Once inside, she locked the door to give herself a chance to catch her breath. She didn’t want Damon to come outside and drag her from the car.
After a few minutes, when she could at least get some air down to her lungs, she started the car and drove straight over to Marie’s house barefoot. She wasn’t at home. More than likely, she was at Calvin’s place. She really didn’t want to bother them, but she didn’t want to go back to the house with Damon either. She drove around for a few minutes then decided to check into a hotel. She found a place that she felt was okay then went into the trunk to grab a pair of shoes, since she was barefoot. Once inside the rented room, rather than call Marie’s cell phone and cause a panic, she called her home number and left a message. Denise examined herself in the mirror and saw the imprints of Damon hands around her neck. It was so clear that she could count the finger indentions. “What was he thinking? That’s not the man I married,” she thought.

The Journey-No Means No
I started screaming and kicking. He covered my mouth with one hand and told me that no one could hear me. He also told me to relax and enjoy it. I spat on him and started crying. I knew this was not going to make a difference, but it was all I could do. I was saying, “Don’t do that!” “No, stop!” No, please stop!” But, he wasn’t listening to me. To take my mind off of what was happening I started thinking about how I was going to get home. I was worried about missing my curfew and my mother being angry with me. I was no longer worried about being on punishment. This was the worse punishment imaginable. I realized that I must be a stupid person to have this happen twice in as many years. Both from people I thought I knew. I prayed that he would have a daughter and have to worry about someone doing this to her.
