I met M.R. at Arizona Dreaming last year and we became quick friends and have been good friends every since.
Oh yeah for those that must know....the lovely lady who is gracing her cover is M.R. Murphy HERSELF!
The handsome man who is holding her is James D Magnussen who is the current "Man of our Dreams" from Arizona Dreaming this year and is also a good friend of mine too.
1. Before we start talking about your book, why don’t you tell everybody a little bit about yourself?
Hello Everyone! So you’re curious as to who the person is behind the Murph mask, well alright alright. I think it’s safe to say, that I’m a biggest goofball this side of Texas. I currently reside in the southwest with a couple of mini me’s and a fluffball of a cat who I catch on a frequent occasion drinking my coffee. Along with writing, I also have a stock photo company that sells affordable photos for any indie author or graphic artist on a budget.
I’m an avid hiker, rock climber, and waterfall seeker. I rarely watch TV (except for The Walking Dead…love me so Daryl) I’m an outdoorsy kind of chick. Whether I’m playing around in my garden, traveling to the mountains for a nature phootshoot *insert cough*camping* cough*
Oh and most importantly, I’m a terrible shoe whore. I am addicted to shoes, especially boots. I don’t dress in any one definitive style. I’ll rock anything from the hard-ass biker chick look to chic to gymrat, and sometimes all in one day! All I can say is JUST OWN IT, own who you are!
So in a nut shell, that’s me.
2. Besides writing, what other things do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I love photography, seeking out new places to shoot. Spending time with my mini me’s is always an adventure. I love playing in my garden, reading and sometimes cooking. Working with horses, and using touch therapy to help the ones who’ve been abused, is also another passion of mine.
3. What is your daily routine as far as when you have an idea for your story?
Well, that’s where my spazztastic side comes into play. Usually my story ideas come from crazy dreams, or if I’m really lucky, inspiration will strike me while I’m awake and I go from there. I let the idea formulate, mull it over and it’ll start to play out as a movie in my head. Once the basic concept is there, I jot down everything I can remember. Not skimping on any little detail is really important, since my writing is very descriptive. Outlining what I can for the overall story is also very important. Since I’m backlogged with twenty-something stories all waiting to be written, I try to put as much information into y notes as possible, so when it comes time to pull up that storyline, I have a thorough basis to start from.
As far as current works, once I’ve moved on to actually writing, I use my general outline. But it’s not uncommon for the story to stray off in a different direction. My characters speak to me, and in truth, most times I’ll go back and reread what I’ve written the day before and shock the hell out of myself, because I won’t remember writing the previous chapter. The most important thing for me is to let my mind explore other ideas and flow the creative juices freely.
4. Where do you get your ideas from?
Dreams, and sometimes music if I’m in a mood. Sometimes I’ll read something from another genre and the sparks will ignite for a whole new style of story. And then there’s always the fall back of real life situations.
5. Out of all of the stories you’ve written so far, what would be your favorite and why?
Oh, great question. So I think my favorite as of right now, would be my current work in progress, THE CHRONICLES OF THE DARK ANGELS: DARKEST BEFORE DAWN. I’m the type of writer who infuses parts of my life into my writing. And this story is no different. This one has impacted me the most writing it and rereading it. The journey the characters take, and the reawakening that take place, is truly an intense thing. It has taken me two years to complete it, due to the fact that it has been a very emotional story to write. This one has my heart stamped all over it and I’m utterly grateful that Ferrian and Remi allowed me the opportunity to write their story.
6. Tell us something funny about yourself that not a lot of people know about?
I’m completely addicted to gummy bears. No, no joking around. I’ll bite a finger off if someone tries to take my gummy bears!
7. Does any of the stories you’ve written based on real life experiences or basically just from imagination?
A little of both. Obviously I’ve never encountered a Ginn (known in the supernatural world as Djinn) in any underground lairs in New Orleans (but damn that’d be really cool) as Seth Fauteaux did in GINN HUNTER. But I can’t completely say that some of the scenes in THE LAST KISS were fictional. Like I said, I like to infuse apart of myself in each story. Even if it’s a part of my personality, the way a character looks, or the story itself. Although some of the stories in my to be written file, will come from my completely deranged imagination!
8. Does your ‘muse’ have a name and if so what is his/her name?
Oh boy! You’d have to ask that now wouldn’t you. *insert bright red blushes* Yes I have a wonderful muse, whom I’m lucky enough to call upon frequently. If anyone has read the dedications in THE LAST KISS, I’m pretty sure you’ll figure it out too!
9. What other genre besides the one you are writing about now would you like to venture into writing?
Well, I’ve written a few children’s stories that I’m currently seeking an artist for. I love writing Paranormal fiction! But I have found that I’m dabbling in women’s lit recently and Sci-fy is something that I’ve been playing around with for a while, as well.
10. Who are your favorite authors that are out now?
Oh so many, ok I’ll narrow that one down. J R Ward (no brainer there, right!), My home town pal, Lara Adrian, Larissa Ione, Vince Flynn, Dean Koontz, Anne Rice, Deena Ramiel (LOVE her Book Waitress series!!! Oh and the Trinity collection…OMG, So hot), Jenna Pizzi, (another writer who hits straight to the heart of life in her stories, especially The Long Road Home) And Of course I can’t forget the Queen of Steam, the utterly fabulous Jamallah Bergman!
11. Who is your favorite female and male characters from your books and why?
Well that’s a toss-up right now between Alix & Damian from EVER MINE and Ferrian & Remi from THE CHRONICLES OF THE DARK ANGELS: DARKEST BEFORE DAWN. Both have strong female leads. Two totally different personalities, both struggling with who they are, and yet both I love equally for the inner strength they hold. The guys are both super delicious. Strong willed, yet supportive of their females. They make for a great balance, strong and virile as well as loving and supportive.
12. What do you think is the hardest thing about being a writer?
Writing the story. I know that sounds silly, but let me explain. When I tell people what I do for a living, I get the same response without fail. Wow, that’s great! You must be rich. (which I interject with “Not yet” because we all need to keep up positive affirmations), I have a great story to write that I think will sell better than Harry Potter, but I don’t have the time to write it. OR I get the “My life story would be a great story to write, can I just tell you it and have you write it for me?”
Unfortunately, writing isn’t all about coming up with an idea and just dropping it on paper and viola! You have instant success. I’ve written plenty of scenes that I’ve either had to shelve or toss out completely. I’ve spent sometimes day, when it comes to short stories, or most often the case, months writing and rewriting/revisioning the stories I’ve written. Writing is a constant evolution of writer’s consciousness. There’s much time that I spend researching little details, down to buying silly things like swords, guns and whatnot just so I can accurately describe the look and feel of what I’m writing about. Writing is an art, everyone either thinks they can do it, or wants to do it. I say go for it. If you have a great story sitting in your head, get it out onto paper! But be prepared for many early mornings, late nights, frustrations, blocks and bouts of insanity. It’s not as easy peasy as people would like to think. But it is a worthwhile road to travel if you’re willing to put in the hard work that goes along with it.
13. What advice would you give someone who wants to start off being a writer?
First, start with an idea. Spin it around and around until more ideas spring from that idea. Get it down on paper. Do you research. Let me say that again. DO YOU RESEARCH, whatever it might be. And most importantly realize that the feelings that will inevitably come during the process are all NORMAL! Every writer, even Anne Rice and Stephen King have experienced all the highs and lows. Just keep pushing forward. Your story will only be as good as the love, energy and power you put behind your words.
14. If you hadn’t become a writer, what do you think you would be doing right now? Working a normal 9-5 job. No, realistically I would’ve remained working the business I had as an outbound Massage Therapist for humans and horses.
15. What would be the perfect Romantic getaway?
That’s a toss-up between spending time in a castle in Ireland, connecting with my roots and Costa Rica because I love exploring and the jungles there look so enticing. Yeah, I know. Not what you were expecting. I love history and exploring and being somewhere with someone I love, who enjoys it as much as I, is all I really need.
Well now that we got the question and answer out of the way…..why don’t you tell us about your latest story you have out now? Sounds peachy keen to me. THE LAST KISS is a contemporary romance bordering on erotica, totally unintentional by the way.
When time and distance had separated them, Raeve and Aidan look back to the past and clear the way for their future. Once again, time threatens their love as Aidan prepares to leave for his next mission.
Can two star-crossed souls learn to overcome the past in just a few days and pick up where they left off? Or are the doomed to travel the same road once again?
Only time will tell…
Here’s a little excerpt from THE LAST KISS! Enjoy!
Watching Raeve from the bed as she brushed through her long black hair, Aidan finally felt a moment of peace. It had been months since he enjoyed the sweet hum of her voice as she sang along to whatever song she was listening to. Making another deposit in his memory bank, he drank in the sight of her twisting her hips to the rhythm of the music. Smirking, he couldn’t help remembering all the delicious ways her body worked him over with each new encounter. Her luscious curves were accented by her black satin nighty. It begged him to touch every inch of her supple flesh. Eying the piece of fabric, he was more than ready to discard it from her sinuous body and replace it with the feel of his skin on hers. The rigid length that hid beneath the suffocating confines of his jeans bounced in appreciation of the view as his heated stare nearly burned through the small scrap of fabric covering her petite body.
He caught her glancing back at him, under a fringe of dark lashes. The quirk of her smile and blush of her cheeks in the reflection made her look all the more resplendent. It was that same smirk she held while she served him dinner, and settled in his lap to distract him from eating. His stomach never refused a home cooked meal, but he was lost to hypnotic spell. A sultry grin spread across her face as she wrapped her arms around him. Slowly he inhaled her sugary scent, pulling it deep into his lungs. His tongue burned for one more taste of her, but one more would never be enough.
