I have the lovely Polly J. Adams with me talking about her book "Four Temptations" as well as giving us a bit of her other book "The Object of his Desire"
1. Before we start talking about your book, why don’t you tell everybody a little bit about yourself?
Only daughter of a comfortably middle-class English family, I’ve worked in TV, publishing and design, but now I concentrate on my main love: writing. I write all kinds of things under various pen-names, with novels published by big publishers and sold to the movies. As me, though, I write erotic romance (as PJ Adams) and more explicit erotica (as Polly J Adams)... which takes some explaining, to my comfortably middle-class English family!
2. Besides writing, what other things do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Reading, of course. Going out with my friends, a loose grouping we started to call the Girls’ Club - some of the juicier anecdotes told at the Girls’ Club are recycled in my work (with the original protagonists’ permission and encouragement!) . It’s amazing what some of my quieter friends have got up to! Other than that, I enjoy watching sports (love going to Wimbledon each year!), and a bit of amateurish artwork.
3. What is your daily routine as far as when you have an idea for your story?
Sit down and write until either the story is finished, or I am. With a bit of checking Facebook, email, Twitter, Pinterest and the like. Oh, and breaks t make more coffee and watch the birds out of my kitchen window. And to tidy up the kitchen (I love my other half, but, to be blunt, he’s a bit of a messy pig sometimes). Maybe a bit of ironing, or baking. That kind of thing.
4. Where do you get your ideas from?
The Girls’ Club have been great - the fact that many of my stories are adapted from real life experiences gives them a bit of an edge, I think. Some of the other ideas come from idle speculation (I call that one ‘research’), things people say, news stories, or just plain fantasizing.
5. Out of all of the stories you’ve written so far, what would be your favorite and why?
I think I’m most happy with The Object of His Desire (by PJ Adams). It’s a set of four novellas that join together as a novel. The four novellas have already been published individually as ebooks; the complete novel is due at the start of July in both ebook and paperback formats. It’s a big erotic romance about a young American woman’s encounters with a super-wealthy English family, and goes from a brief encounter at a wedding to big dramatic settings and even murder, as two men compete for my heroine’s heart. It was tremendous fun to write, and I think it’s the best thing I’ve written. Also, I’m delighted that it’s been included in the second Insatiable Reads promotion, taking place in July alongside some fantastic erotic romance and romance authors.
6. Tell us something funny about yourself that not a lot of people know about?
An ex-boyfriend ran away and joined a religious sect shortly after we split up. He was clearly looking for something I couldn’t offer...
7. Does any of the stories you’ve written based on real life experiences or basically just from imagination?
Yes, I’ve grouped together most of the ones inspired by real life as the Girls’ Club stories (mostly collected into Bad Girls, Bad Girls 2, Girl Talk and, ahem, Danger Fucks). I only ever take my and my friends’ anecdotes as the starting point, though: stories that work well in a bar after a drink or two, rarely work so well once you’ve written them down.
8. Does your ‘muse’ have a name and if so what is his/her name?
I’ve never thought of it like that, but I guess my muse would be Mel, Selena, Jess, Stacey and the others at the Girls’ Club!
9. What other genre besides the one you are writing about now would you like to venture into writing?
I started out writing erotic short stories, but more recently I’ve been writing longer stories – still plenty of sex but with more character development and story. I’m really enjoying this, and I love the elements of suspense and action in The Object of His Desire. The readers seem to enjoy them, too, which is good because I have plans for more novel-length stories along these lines.
10. Who are your favorite authors that are out now?
I read almost anything I can lay my hands on. I’m particularly impressed with writers like Sara Fawkes and Katie Cramer, who write well and are helping to push erotic romance out into the open.
11. Who is your favorite female and male characters from your books and why?
Will Bentinck-Stanley from The Object of His Desire is a lovely mix. He’s very alpha male in lots of ways – confident, powerful, rich and, of course, very easy on the eye – but he’s also surprisingly sensitive and vulnerable if you can chip away at the protective layers and get through to the real Will. A female character I had immense fun with is Ellie, from my interlocking set of stories, The Four Temptations (published separately as four ebook novelettes, with the full ebook and paperback due soon). In the first story she’s just a background character, the bitch who stole the protagonist’s husband; but the third story is told from Ellie’s point of view and we get an entirely different perspective, and then there’s a wonderfully generous gesture on her part in the final story. Sometimes characters just come to life like that.
12. What do you think is the hardest thing about being a writer?
You get so many knocks in this business (and I’ve been involved in it at lots of different levels), you have to develop a thick skin to cope with all the rejections, bad reviews and lack of attention, just as you have to learn not to let the praise and rave reviews go to your head. Hardest of all, I think, is the unreliability of it all. As I said before, I’ve sold books to the movies and been published by big, high profile publishers, but even then you never know where the next payment is going to come from, and most writers end up mixing their writing with various non-writing jobs just to pay the regular bills.
13. What advice would you give someone who wants to start off being a writer?
Write. I was tempted to leave my answer at that single word, but then I thought that would be a bit glib and unfair, so I’ll expand on that: write; write more; write when you’re not ‘inspired’ and when you are; write more and then more; keep on writing. Successful writers work hard, and they’re stubborn.
14. If you hadn’t become a writer, what do you think you would be doing right now?
I’d love to say glamour model or stripper, but I’m just not built that way, and I’m not going to have a boob job no matter how much it would put a smile on my man’s face. It’s hard to think I wouldn’t be doing something creative. In fact it’s hard to think that I wouldn’t be doing something creative with words. I love words.
15. What would be the perfect Romantic getaway?
Somewhere overlooking the sea, where you can be warm and snug and naked inside but with stunning views, maybe a wild thunderstorm raging outside. Preferably with Halle Berry and Clive Owen.
Well now that we got the question and answer out of the way…..why don’t you tell us about your latest story you have out now?
My latest... I’m a busy person. The third of my Billionaires’ Sex Club stories is out: Traded at the Billionaires’ Sex Club. But then there’s also the Four Temptations stories, a set I’m particularly pleased with. Here’s what it says on the back cover of the print edition:
Four Temptations by PJ Adams
Four inter-locking story lines in one short novel: three women... one pivotal night... four temptations...
1. The Tipping Point: Rebecca's husband has walked out, leaving his best friend Simon to pick up the pieces. Rebecca has never seen Simon as anything other than a friend until now; certainly not as a lover. But now the seed of possibility has been sown, should she? Shouldn't she? And can she even resist?
2. Words of Love: Is Rebecca's friend Maggie really considering getting back together with her old flame two years after a vitriolic break-up? Does even a small part of her believe that they can make it work this time round?
3. The Other Woman: Ellie is in her early twenties. She's slim and blonde, she has perfect cheekbones, big blue eyes, perfect shape, legs to die for. She's Rebecca’s worst nightmare and her husband’s wet dream.
4. A Woman Scorned: They say revenge is best served up cold. Maybe. In Rebecca Swaine's experience revenge is best served up in a public place with a large glass of Pinot Gris. A steamy, passionate story of love and revenge.
Three women... one pivotal night: Four Temptations.
Stories of passion, risk and love. Explicit erotic romance from the bestselling author of The Object of His Desire and The Wings of Desire.
And after that, in July, there’s the big one: The Object of His Desire:
When Trudy goes to her estranged brother's wedding, the last thing she expects is one of those moments: a handsome stranger, their eyes meeting across a crowded room... a tempting, but dangerous stranger.
Determined to find out more, she discovers that dark secrets bind him to her brother; she also learns that he's the kind of man who gets what he wants, and what he wants right now is Trudy.
He introduces her to the world of the super-wealthy, showering her with designer clothes, shoes, and diamonds, whisking her off to dinner dates by private jet... what more could a girl want?
But as she finds out more about him, Trudy begins to wonder if she can ever love a man she can never fully trust. A man involved in murder and blackmail, who may just be using her as an alibi. Should she run or let herself fall for him?
And will he give her a choice?
A passionate erotic romance, where scandals buried away in the past lead to murderous intrigue in the present, in the intensely steamy world of the super-wealthy and powerful.
