Today I have Bridge Midway with me talking about a bit about herself as well as her sharing a bit about her two books "Corporate Needs" & "Licorice Whips"
1. Before we start talking about your book, why don’t you tell everybody a little bit about yourself?
First of all, thanks so much, Jamallah, for interviewing me! My name is Bridget Midway. I’ve been published since 2005 and write for Phaze Books, Loose Id, Liquid Silver Books and Parker Publishing. I write contemporary interracial erotic romance. The subgenre I’m probably best known for is contemporary interracial BDSM erotic romance.
I enjoy writing boundary-pushing works because it keeps both me and the readers interested.
2. Besides writing, what other things do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I have a regular day job, so if I’m not working and I’m not writing then I’m sleeping. However, if I’m not doing any of those things, I love to read (of course) and I love to get lost in a good movie. I find myself getting invested in what the actors are saying because it makes me wonder if that’s what the screenwriter had written for them.
3. What is your daily routine as far as when you have an idea for your story?
If I’m writing a short story or novella, and I have the idea in my head, I’ll get in bed with my laptop on my lap and I’ll start writing. Only for shorter works am I a pantser, meaning I write by the seat of my pants without an outline or guide.
When I write a novel, the first thing I do is get my trusty notebook and I’ll detail what the hero and heroine look like, from hair color to eye color to skin color (since I write interracial romances). Then I’ll write what the characters’ internal and external conflicts are. If I don’t do that before I write, I’ll get what writers lovingly call the “muddle in the middle.” That’s where you get to the middle of your novel and you get stuck, or what most writers think of as writer’s block. It’s not writer’s block. It’s just that the conflict isn’t strong enough to carry the writer through to the end.
After I do that, I write a summary of what I want to see happen in each chapter. Doing that also ensures that my conflicts will carry the full story. If it won’t, my outline will stop right in the middle.
4. Where do you get your ideas from?
Most of my ideas come from dreams. I’ll also use newspaper and magazine articles. Sometimes it’s just me trying to figure out if I can make something work. I’ve never seen the TV show “The Bachelor”, but I had wondered if a premise like that could work if a BDSM Dom looked for a submissive that way. That’s how my novel Love My Way came about. Instead of giving each woman a rose, the hero takes away their collars, a symbol of ownership in the BDSM world.
5. Out of all of the stories you’ve written so far, what would be your favorite and why?
All of my books and stories are like my babies. Just like a parent wouldn’t have a favorite child, I can’t say what work is my favorite. I can tell you that readers seem to love Love My Way and my Corporate series.
6. Tell us something funny about yourself that not a lot of people know about?
Gosh, that’s a hard one. Despite writing erotic romances and BDSM, I’m pretty much a dork. At any given moment, you can see me tripping on something somewhere. I’m also constantly spilling things on myself. Yes, I’m a walking, talking mess.
7. Does any of the stories you’ve written based on real life experiences or basically just from imagination?
The stories all come from my imagination. However, I have based the looks and some mannerisms of my characters on people I know.
8. Does your ‘muse’ have a name and if so what is his/her name?
Oh no. I haven’t named my muse. But trust me, I know when she’s gone. She left me for a bit in 2012. But she’s back with a vengeance this year.
9. What other genre besides the one you are writing about now would you like to venture into writing?
I’ve always said that I would love to write a time travel piece. I’m such a linear thinker, I don’t know if I can wrap my mind around that concept. I have an idea for the story. The execution would be the tricky part.
10. Who are your favorite authors that are out now?
I have lots of them. Of course I read my friends: Yvette Hines, Aliyah Burke, Denise Jeffries, Andrea Jackson, Felicia Mason, Patricia Mae White, Michelle Monkou, Gwyneth Bolton, Celeste O. Norfleet and A.C. Arthur. I also like discovering new authors. Nothing gets your creative juices flowing more than to get inspired by a new author’s voice and writing.
11. Who is your favorite female and male characters from your books and why?
Again, this question is like the previous one asking me to name my favorite book. I love all of my characters. That said, there are some characteristics in some characters that I enjoyed writing. I loved writing the character C-A-I-N and my novella “C-A-I-N and A-B-E-L” through Phaze Books. This character in my futuristic erotic romance was just very blunt and honest. Sex with him was very animalistic and gentle at the same time.
As for female character, I liked Edna “Madame Z” Zulma from Corporate Seduction and Corporate Desires. I felt sorry for her even as I wrote her story. She needed a happily ever after ending.
12. What do you think is the hardest thing about being a writer?
Writing. The hardest thing about being a writer is writing. I find that as soon as you tell people you write stories, people are willing to share story ideas with you. So with that, you can’t say that you lack in story ideas. But getting your butt into a seat (or a bed in my case) and actually writing the words can be a daunting task.
Although I say writing is the hardest thing about being a writer, it’s also the most rewarding. When the words flow, it feels freeing.
13. What advice would you give someone who wants to start off being a writer?
Whenever I’m asked this question, I always give the exact same advice. KEEP WRITING. As soon as you write and complete your first manuscript, pat yourself on the back, give yourself a little party, tell your friends. When you’re done doing that, start writing the next manuscript and the next one. Don’t stop. Stockpile your manuscripts. What will happen is that when an editor or agent picks up your manuscript, their very next question is “What else do you have?” You want to be able to say, “Well, I have this story and this one, or you can check this one out.” Give them choices and options. Also show them that you can be pretty prolific. If they see that you’re interested in going this as a business person and you don’t have just one story you want to sell, they’ll see the potential.
The other advice I would give is to read. You can’t call yourself an author if you don’t read books by other authors.
14. If you hadn’t become a writer, what do you think you would be doing right now?
If I wasn’t an author, I would be doing exactly what I’m doing now. I would be working for the local electric utility company. Not exciting but it pays the bills.
15. What would be the perfect Romantic getaway?
I’m all about beautiful scenery. So a place like Hawaii or a tropical resort would be ideal for me.
Well now that we got the question and answer out of the way…..why don’t you tell us about your latest story you have out now?
Actually my latest release came out November of 2012. However, it’s already out of publication. Unfortunately one of my publishers closed. So all of my recent works have been pulled and are no longer in publication. I’m using that unfortunate event as an opportunity to improve on my stories. My plan is to expand each story to full-length. I would also like to make them kinky by adding a BDSM element to it.
Since I have mentioned Love My Way and my Corporate series, I will talk about those. As I mentioned above, Love My Way is about a Dominant searching for a submissive through a reality TV show. I lovingly call it “The Bachelor” with a whip. Readers can get the ebook and print version from Phaze Books: http://www.phaze.com/book.php?title=Love+My+Way
There are three books in the Corporate series: Corporate Seduction, Corporate Desires and Corporate Needs. The basis of these three contemporary interracial BDSM erotic romances is finding love – and kink – in the workplace.
What I’m excited about is my upcoming contemporary interracial BDSM erotic romance novel Licorice Whips. The novel will be coming out through Phaze Books in November 2013. To celebrate this release, I along with friend and fellow author Yvette Hines will be having an in-person event on Saturday, November 9th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hampton Inn and Suites in Chesapeake, Virginia. All attendees will receive copies of both of our novels. Yvette’s novel is called Red Hots. We’ll be running contests, reading excerpts, provide lunch and have a corset contest. That’s right. We’re encouraging attendees to come there in their best corset. Whoever has the best one will win a special gift basket. Besides all of those wonderful things, BDSM Domme and author Mistress Dama de Noche will be there to show off various toys and do demonstrations. It’s a real live 50 Shades of Grey in person. Right now until September 15th, registration is $45 per person. From September 15th to October 9th, it’ll be $50. To register or for more information, go to my website at http://www.BridgetMidway.com.
Here’s the blurb:
“Sweet” Hawkes is a BDSM dominant who has lost his smile. Although he loves the candy store called Decadent Treats that he co-owns with his brother, he’s lost the passion he had for making treats for his customers.
After releasing his last submissive, Sweet decides to dive in head first into business and forget about love and disciplining. He wants to open up a second Decadent Treats and a store that would sell quality BDSM toys and apparel. Sweet never expects to find an obstacle outside his door.
Nikla Dearwood has made it her mission to picket outside of the Decadent Treats store to warn customers about eating too much sugar. Although as a Pilates and yoga instructor, it would seem as though her protests have to do with leading a healthy lifestyle. Nikla has other motives. Besides this protest, she wants to open up her own exercise studio in downtown Virginia Beach.
Nikla isn’t scared away from her picketing mission when a tall and sexy man from Decadent Treats tries to get her to stop. When she finds that same guy checking out an open storefront in downtown Virginia Beach that she also wants, she’s now interested in him.
The two check out each other’s businesses. Sweet subjects himself to a yoga class. When Nikla goes to Sweet’s candy store, she finds that the man has a different way of tempting her with candy. When things get out of hand in the store, the two made a deal: they’ll agree to play and have sex until a decision on the suites is made. After that, they agree to go their separate ways.
When Nikla starts to have feelings for Sweet, can she give up the fight for this man? Can Sweet open his heart enough to let the right woman in?
Because this story is not going to be released until November, and Yvette and I are keeping details about our stories hush-hush, I can’ t post an excerpt of this. However, I will post an excerpt from my novel Corporate Needs. Here’s the blurb for that work:
Princess Watkins was damn good at her job as a Dominatrix at Suite Surrender, an exclusive BDSM B&B owned by her friends May and Winston Biggers. At least she thought she was before Winston decides to bring in his friend, Dominant Erik Hendrix, for consideration as his replacement as Dungeon Master over all of the Doms and Dommes working there.
Erik Hendrix expected to be made Dungeon Master at Suite Surrender. What he didn't expect was to be competing for the spot. He also didn't expect that his competitor would be a very sexy Domme. Too bad he has a strict policy against dating another Domme.
With her skills questioned, Princess wonders if maybe she should go "vanilla" and date the dull, new accountant. But with her strong pull to Erik, she's also starting to question her role as a Dominatrix.
Readers can get the ebook and print copy through Phaze Books: http://www.phaze.com/book.php?title=Corporate+Needs
Here’s an excerpt.
Princess swung it open with as much fervor. “Are you crazy? Why are you pounding on my door like that?”
The door next to hers opened. Dipshit stood with his hands up like a begging dog and a leash hanging from his mouth.
“Not now.” She pointed to her pet.
Dipshit sulked back into his room.
Princess stepped backwards into her room. Erik took that as an invitation.
“That was a rotten thing to do to your client.” Erik strained to keep his gaze from dropping down to check out her body hidden underneath a billowy but short yellow dress. “He needed you.”
“Verbal humiliation is his thing.” Princess adopted the same stance as Erik, arms crossed and angry. “I know you didn’t march all the way over here to lecture me on how I treat my sub, right? Besides, I’m the one who needs to be mad at you.”
Erik felt every wrinkle on his forehead crease even harder. “Mad at me for what? Ever since you’ve met me, you’ve intruded on my life. First you heckle me at my first demonstration.”
“You stole my BDSM name.” She pointed her finger at him.
“Do you really think that you are the only one in the BDSM community with the name Mistress Pain?”
“I spelled it in a cute way, P-A-Y-N-E.”
“It all sounds the same.” Damn, she was cute when she said that. Erik continued, “Then you interrupted my exercising session this morning. And the last straw was when you barged in during my scene. What in the world could I have done that would make you mad at me, especially with everything you’ve done to me so far?”
“Because of all of the crap you said at breakfast, I hardly had an appetite during lunch.”
“You mean during your date?”
“It wasn’t a date.” She flipped her braids off her shoulder. “Why do you seem to care what I do with another employee here? Shouldn’t you be worried about your own business?”
Erik smiled. “When I become your supervisor, this will be one of my concerns.”
She glowered and shook her head. “Eat shit. You storm in this place like you own it and everything in here, and now you want to tell me what to do. Is that why you came down here? You wanted to keep gloating?”
He put his hands on his waist. “No. I wanted to tell you that your little intrusion earlier before my session made me break my concentration. In the twenty years I’ve been a Dom, I’ve never broken my concentration during a play session.”
“And you’re blaming me for that?” Princess chuckled and took a couple of steps toward him, closing in on the gap between them. “And just what were you thinking about, Master Pain?”
Erik’s heartbeat accelerated. Staring at her mouth, the curve of her breast under her dress, the smoothness of her dark skin, he felt so out of control. He watched her body, scanning it for clues, signs, any sort of indication that a reaction from him would be welcomed.
So far Princess had mirrored his actions…until now. After making her inquiry, her gaze dropped. The motion lasted less than a millisecond, but long enough for someone who studied the human body, both as a job and as a lifestyle, to catch the change in attitude. She wrung her hands together as though
anticipating something, a command from him maybe.
Light streaming from her window projected through her thin dress to show off her dark areolas. As though he willed it, her nipples hardened. He caught her breath quickening. He watched her pink tongue sliding over her plump bottom lip.
In one smooth motion, Erik framed her face and pressed his lips against hers. As he suspected, they were soft, supple, seductive. She moaned, at least he hoped that noise that groaned through her throat constituted as a moan and not a grunt or any other noise made out of disgust.
His thumbs caressed her cheeks. Her skin matched the feeling of smooth velvet. The texture forced him to imagine what her pussy would feel like with his cock inside of her, sliding in and out. What would she taste like? Would she submit to him?
Submit? Christ, what was he doing? Erik jerked back at the same time that the realization hit him that he was kissing a co-worker, another Dominant.
“Shit!” Erik stared at Princess.
With her eyes wide and her mouth agape, Princess looked as stunned as Erik felt. “Fuck!”
He raked his fingers through his hair, but never broke eye contact with her. “Shit.” How the hell would he explain the kiss to Win? He would have to tell him. If he didn’t, Princess would.
Princess covered her mouth as she left her gaze directed to the floor. “Fuck.”
When she peered up to stare at him—not with shock, but with wonder, like she pondered over possibilities, like Erik had been doing since he’d entered the room—his cock began to engorge.
“Shit.” Why was he so panicked? He and Princess were adults. They hadn’t broken any laws or rules. They shared a moment of mutual attraction satisfied by the kiss.
Princess ran her hands over her stomach and down her legs, gripping the hem of her dress once her hands reached it. “Fuck.”
Now what she said didn’t sound like a pissed off explicative. If Erik wasn’t mistaken, she made it sound like a request.
“Shit.” He’d be a fool to turn away from her…if she, indeed, did want him.
Being a Dominant, she gripped the ties on his pants and pulled them to undo them. “Fuck.”
“Shit.” The hell with it. Erik pushed Princess against the wall next to the door.
As she pushed his pants down, he hoisted her dress up to her waist, revealing that she wore nothing underneath. At her height, he had to scoop her under her ass and elevate her high enough to plunge inside of her.
With one hand holding her, and one leg wrapped around his hips, Erik dipped his fingers in between her pussy lips and found her completely wet as well as clean-shaven.
Princess reached down and wrapped her fingers around his shaft. “Fuck.”
Her eyes widened as though she hadn’t expected him to be hard, or maybe it was the size.
Erik didn’t care about what she must have thought. Her touch alone almost made him come.
“Shit.” No time to wait or waste.
Erik helped Princess guide the head of his cock to her awaiting hole. In one thrust he pushed inside of her tightness.
“Fuck!” She gripped his shoulders, tightened her legs around him, and curved her hips to allow him a deeper access.
“Shit!” Erik thrust in and out of her. He had imagined she would be tight.
What he experienced blew him away.
Most women he’d had sex with felt as though their bodies were made for him. Not Princess. Nothing about her seemed tailor-made for him. Not her height, not her style, not her manner. But, damn if this didn’t feel good. It felt so right.
As he pumped in and out of her, he wrapped her braids around his hand and pulled her head back, making her look up at him, yield to him, realize that if she wanted this, she would belong to him.
In turn, Princess fisted his hair. Each time he tugged her hair, she yanked his until their tug-of-war almost became comical.
Erik dipped his head down far enough to lick her long neck. When he got up to her chin, she pulled his hair up so that she could direct him to her lips.
Hungrily, he devoured her mouth, nipping at her bottom lip and invading her mouth with his tongue.
She accepted everything he did, not one whimper, not one cry, not one complaint. Not that he had expected her to do so.
Erik gripped the skinny strap of her dress and pulled it down, exposing her breast. He wanted to suckle it, nibble on her pert nipple, make her cry out for more. Instead he massaged it in his hand. He rolled her hardened nipple around his thumb until she emitted a moan. Then he placed her sensitive pebble between his thumb and index finger and squeezed it.
The pressure caused her to scream, “Fuck!”
Her inner vaginal walls constricted around his cock.
“Shit!” Erik felt her need. He knew she would have to come soon, and damn if he didn’t want to as well.
He stared into her eyes. In that moment—both of them panting, in such great need and desire, ready to explode—they shared an unspoken conversation about what would happen after all of this. From the light he saw now fading from her eyes, he knew she saw no future between them. If he gauged her reaction correctly, Erik should have been relieved. He’d weakened, and, better yet, he got Princess to crumble. He could use that to his advantage, especially for that dungeon master position.
He gave her nipple another hard squeeze, this time sustaining it until, with legs thrashing and her fingernails raking his bare back, she came hard. Her legs twitched as Erik had his own release deep inside of her. He held himself still, holding his breath until his legs quaked and his lungs burned. Every muscle tensed as though working in concert for this one act, this one orgasm. After a beat, Erik released a long breath and kissed the side of Princess’s face.
When he brought his head up, he stared at her and she stared back at him. At the same time she said, “Fuck” when he said, “Shit.”
A soft rapping sounded at Princess’s door. “Go away, Dipshit.”
“Um, this is Winston.”
Erik pulled out of Princess and helped her regain her footing on the floor.
The sound of Winston’s voice sobered Erik to the reality of what just happened.
Winston said through the door, “I need to see you in my office. Now.”
Princess glanced at Erik. “Okay. I’ll be there in a bit.”
Erik listened for Winston’s heavy footfalls to know when he walked away.
A few seconds later, Erik heard, “And Erik, you come along with her, okay?”
