Today Kenzie Michaels is with me today talking about her latest book as well as a bit about herself.
1. Before we start talking about your book, why don’t you tell everybody a little bit about yourself?
Thank you for having me today Jamallah! I’m Kenzie Michaels and live in southwest Indiana with my spouse, three kids, granddaughter, and three dogs. I sing karaoke every Saturday night and am also in my church choir. I’ve been writing since the 5th grade, but only seriously since the early 1990’s.
2. Besides writing, what other things do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I’m addicted to TV, though most of my shows end up on the DVR, so whenever the granddaughter’s at her dad’s, I tend to binge-watch my news shows (60 Minutes and CBS Sunday Morning) or my crime dramas (L&O SVU and Criminal Minds). I can usually watch Survivor and Amazing Race ‘Live’, or at least the night the air.
3. Where do you get your ideas from?
Honestly, I don’t know. Life, maybe? I’ve gotten suggestions from others containing a single line or character name and it just comes to me.
4. Out of all of the stories you’ve written so far, which would be your favorite and why?
I actually have two. Teacher’s Pet, which was my 1st ever NaNoWriMo attempt, and Wild At Heart, because it’s not a typical romance. It’s more of a ‘see what can happen in the course of a week’ story, which was inspired by a news blurb on the radio. It wasn’t the story I had in mind at the beginning, but I love the characters.
5. Does any of the stories you’ve written based on real life experiences or basically just from imagination?
LOL….a little bit of ‘me’ creeps into almost every story! Teacher’s Pet was based on a real-life ‘crush’ I had on my son’s teacher; Class Reunion was based on my own 25th Class Reunion and with the plot suggestions; Appetite For Desire and Off The Clock both contain scenarios from my own waitressing years at a country club; Heart’s Last Chance contains a Ladies’ Night Out scene which was loosely based on an evening my BFF had twenty years ago!
6. What other genre besides the one you are writing about now would you like to venture into writing?
Book #3 in The Chosen series delves into the BDSM world, which includes menage. This will most likely be the only one, unless, of course, I find out I like writing it as much as I enjoy reading it! My alter-ego writes Women’s Fiction/New Adult. As soon as I get these aliens out of my head, I’m turning the brain back over to her so she can finish a few more books, ha ha!
7. Who are your favorite authors that are out now?
I have several authors on my ‘auto-buy’ list: Brynn Paulin, Cindy Spencer Pape, Jean Joachim, Kellie Kamryn, Bronwyn Green, Mia Watts, Sandra Cox, Amber Skyze, and Regina Carlysle.
8. Who are your favorite female and male characters from your books and why?
Yikes! You realize I have to choose between 11 couples? Sigh….Kevin and Tammy, since they endured everything I threw at them….Brad and Emma, since it takes place in Colorado…..and I had a lot of fun writing NiKoh’s book. It’s so hard to choose!!!!
9. What do you think is the hardest thing about being a writer?
Juggling everything. Back when I was starting out, it was easy. Get up in the morning, write, send out queries, and write some more until you got the rejection/acceptance letter two months down the road. Okay, so the waiting was HARD! Today, I’m juggling family, social media, promoting myself, finding time to write, personal appearances, and more social media. Time Management is HARD when you’re addicted to Facebook.
10. What advice would you give someone who wants to start off being a writer?
The best advice someone ever gave me was, ‘Don’t get it RIGHT, get it WRITTEN’. Also, make sure you study the craft of writing, read all submission guidelines, and develop that thick skin. When you do get published, leave the ‘diva’ behavior behind. Authors like to support each other, but not if you don’t reciprocate.
Well now that we got the question and answer out of the way…..why don’t you tell us about your latest story you have out now?
Still mourning the tragic death of his beautiful mate, could another Chosen one already be waiting for NiKoh SiLah? To avoid what he’s not ready to accept, he throws himself into his work at Planet Security.
Leaving the Academy behind to follow her dream of working with animals, GiNae SoJae returns home. Preoccupied with work and not ready to take a mate, she’s horrified when her body enters Maturity. GiNae fights the changes occurring within her. But during nightly dreams she cannot control, an unknown man teaches her the secrets of her body.
Will NiKoh and GiNae succumb to the paths they think have been chosen for them or will they discover the true Chosen life that awaits them?
A vision clouded NiKoh’s sight. He watched another man cup her face in his hands and place a gentle kiss on her full lips. The man’s fingers slid into her pale blue locks as she pressed closer, the sight of the her breasts against the man’s chest sent an ache directly to his
“Oh!” GiNae’s gasp cut through the haze. He shook his head, the vision gone. She spun on her heel and hurried from the room.
ViShe looked bewildered, turning her head to look from her daughter’s abrupt exit back to him.
“NiKoh?” She pressed her hand to her lips. “Oh no…”
“I am afraid so.”
“How will you tell her?” ViShe’s eyes filled with tears. “She has not even reached Maturity yet. How did this happen?”
NiKoh stood and pushed back his chair, taking GiNae’s place at the table. “I do not know. I was not even aware of it until just now.”
“I have not felt anything from her. A mother senses when her daughter has met her Chosen, but she has not said one word to me, nor have I felt anything out of the ordinary until I witnessed the way you two were looking at each other.” ViShe took a napkin and wiped the corners of her eyes. “Can I—is it too indelicate to ask what you saw?” Her silvery skin grew mottled.
“ViShe, I’m not even sure of what I saw. I can’t explain it, but rest assured, it was completely innocent. In the past fifteen years, the only time I have held her in my arms was just now, when she was thanking me, and the time she fell off the swing while playing with OkVei. I have never felt anything for her, other than paternal affection, so believe me, this is not something I would have willingly chosen.” He rubbed his temples, trying to make sense of it. “I have not even had the dreams I had when I met BeSai. I do not know if this will pass, or if there is going to be something between us. I promise you, ViShe, with all my heart, if she is meant to be mine, I will not hurt her.”
ViShe nodded. “You are a good, honorable man, NiKoh.” Her voice choked with emotion. “The fact you are allowing her to bring an animal into your home proves that.”
He laughed. “I never thought I would ever do that. Once again, it seems even an old man like myself can change.”
“Thirty-six is not old,” she chastised him. “There is seventeen years between you. GiNae’s father was twenty years my senior, and we had seven wonderful years together, before the accident took his life.” ViShe withdrew her hands from his and stood up. “You are still master of the house and should go enjoy your evening. Do you want me to talk to her?”
NiKoh shook his head. “There is plenty of time. I am in no rush, and I sense she is fighting it. Just let nature take its course.”
Book #3, which is NiKoh’s sister SaLie’s story, is due to arrive next September. I’m still writing it, so no title just yet. If you like BDSM and menage stories, I hope you’ll enjoy it.
