1. Before we start talking about your book, why don’t you tell everybody a little bit about yourself?
I’m from California, born and raised, however I have traveled a bit in my life. I started out as a chef, and held onto that career for 15-years, but I knew it was not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Not to mention I developed bursitis in my right shoulder. I have a master’s in English Literature/Art History; with a Minor in Mythology and History. I am a Professor of English Literature & Art History.
I has five amazing children; Matthew 26, Blazhia 24, Soleil 21, Micah 17 and Sora 11. Matthew, Blazhia and Soleil are in college; so I spend most of my time with Micah and Sora when I’m not writing. I’ve always loved vampires, werewolves, witches, and the things that go bump in the night; and it just rocks my boat to be able to write about them.
2. Besides writing, what other things do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
As boring as it sounds, antiquing lol. Going away for the weekend to some place like Santa Barbra, and just searching for antique finds. I once found an encyclopedia from 1814, inscribed to a little girl named Amelia. I love comic books, so any movie that affiliated with them, I am so there. Of course museums, I salivate over new exhibits, especially anything that has to do with Egypt. Well of course Mythology lol. I find new myths, and I automatically think on how I can incorporate them into what I write. Nevertheless, I still love to cook, and in book 2, the main female character was a chef who lost her restaurant because one of L.A’s finest got food poisoning, but her ex-boyfriend set her up for sabotage. The fact that at one point in my father’s life he was a martial arts instructor and taught me, helps with the fighting scenes in my books; and my love of history and mythology is clear in each of the books that I write.
2. What is your daily routine as far as when you have an idea for your story?
I don’t really have a daily routine so to speak lol. I just write. I mean I’m sure I'm prejudiced by plenty of things. I discover brainwaves in songs, movies, the world at large, or just simple phrases sometimes. I love to write at Starbucks, because the bustling people always inspire me. The nasty woman impatiently yelling at the Starbuck`s employee, becomes a villain. The Hugh Jackman look alike becomes the next wolf; the sexy emo guy the next Master of the city for my vamps. The hot blonde becomes the next warlock, or the tiny brunette my main female character.
I love to write at night, especially since I write paranormal. Rainy nights are good for scenes of action, but full moon nights always seem to give me the most creativity. People in general instigate me to create something new.
3. Where do you get your ideas from?
I base my Paranormal and Faè series on mythology, so I’m constantly inspired by a new myth, new legends, or new facts about lost artifacts; and I incorporate them into my books. For my Historical book Napoleon’s Gift, I was watching this movie called Bordello, lol, and it just sparked an idea. A Lad’s Trouser’s, I saw a girl dressed as a boy, and Mendacity, I thought about my own profession.
4. Out of all of the stories you’ve written so far, what would be your favorite and why?
I really don’t have one. I guess T.B.M.D; Arieanná’s Legend would sort of be my baby, because Arieanná was the first character concept I came up with.
5. Does any of the stories you’ve written based on real life experiences or basically just from imagination?
Most of my books are from imagination, however as any writer does, lol, there are some elements of truth. Book nine in the T.B.M.D series has a bunch of truth in it hahaha, but I won’t say how! Lol, you’ll just have to read Cycles of Change; Jade Council.
6. Does your ‘muse’ have a name and if so what is his/her name?
No, lol not really. I just write.
7. What other genre besides the one you are writing about now would you like to venture into writing?
Well, I actually write in three already, Paranormal, Contemporary and Historical. I’m gearing myself up to write a Sci-Fi, but because of the love that sooo many readers have for the genre, it’s taking me a while, because I want every last detail right. Paranormal is a bit easier to write, you can have a half-vamp half-tiger shifter, and that’s pretty normal (shameless book plug here lol, my book 10 Loose Connections tee-hee-hee), but when it comes to extra terrestrials, alternate universes and the like, you had better know what you’re talking about. I’m a huge Trekie (Star Trek) and Star Wars fan, so I know I’d be a bit irritated myself, if someone screwed with that, unless it was so far out there, that I was like, “awesome”, because it was something totally different from what I’m used to as a reader.
8. Who are your favorite authors that are out now?
Well, I have a few. I’ve always loved Laurell K, Kim Harrison, and Charlaine Harris is okay. For the newbies: Erotica; Fifty Shades of Jungle Fever by L.V. Lewis. I found it hysterically funny. She’s completely awesome.
This awesome lil short Called Open Door Invitation by Dee Carney. It was sexy and cute. And my last is Wildly Inappropriate by Eden Connor. The author got a lot of dissension over the book, because she’s a Caucasian author, and her main character is African-American. This is exactly what I’m speaking on, when I say that people need to get over the color lines, and just read. The book to me was awesome, and has become one of my favorites.
9. Who is your favorite female and male characters from your books and why?
From my Paranormal, T.B.M.D; Arieanná’s Legend; Auron & Arieanná. They remind me so much of myself and my husband. They go through drama, crap, ups & downs, but the love is always there, no matter what. Auron will do whatever it takes to love her, and Arieanná will do the same. I just feel like as you go through the series, you get to see how epic the love truly is. From my Historical: Benjamin and Geneviève from Napoleon’s Gift. That was a love, which stood the test of 14 years, and even with everything that happened, he knew he still loved her 14 years later.
10. What do you think is the hardest thing about being a writer?
The review process! Lol. When you first become a writer, you’re pretty much in this dream-like state. You feel like, I have just blessed the world with my written word, lol, then you get your first bad review, and it’s like an explosion of reality lol. You begin to grow as an author, and realize that no matter what you write, people aren’t always going to like it, so suck it up, and move on.
11. What advice would you give someone who wants to start off being a writer?
I used to get depressed every time I got a rejection letter, especially a form letter from a publishing company. One Christmas my oldest daughter Blazhia, now 24 gave me this cute little book called “Dirty Rotten Rejections.” It listed the many prolific works, which had been turned down over the centuries, and you would be amazed at some of the names like Mark Twain, Edgar Allen Poe, Jane Austin, Gandie, and many others.
What I would say to other writers, “No matter how many dirty rotten rejections you get, keep believing in yourself.” ET was one of the rejected manuscripts, 35 times. Can you imagine that dude’s face that rejected it when the movie hit the next stratosphere in the 80s. Lol, I bet he’s still dazed and confused, and kicking himself up the butt even to this day lol. So keep your head up, believe in what you write, accept the word Author, because many of us still don’t; and “Do yo Thang,”, there is a genre for everyone. If you write well, people will like you. Mind you, not everyone will, but you’ll find your niche.
12. If you hadn’t become a writer, what do you think you would be doing right now?
Well, I was a chef for 15 years, then decided to be an English Literature Professor, which I completely love; so I’m assuming that’s what I’d be doing.
13. What would be the perfect Romantic getaway?
For me, as corny as it sounds, it would be England. I write so much about it, it would be awesome to actually get to see what I’m writing about lol. That’s my retirement package for myself lol.
Well now that we got the question and answer out of the way…..why don’t you tell us about your latest story you have out now?
Since I write a Series, I always find it’s better to talk about the first book, so no one gets lost lol.
T.B.M.D; Arieanná’s Legend
Teaching Between Midnight & Dawn Series
Interracial Paranormal Romance
Multiracial Woman/White Male
Arieanná was pretty much happy with her life.
Her students loved her, she adored teaching; life was simple and uncomplicated.
That is until she met Auron.
Sent by an exclusive underground sect, Auron's there to protect the descendant of Ast at all cost. His number one purpose is to keep the supposed volume of Ast's magic from entering the hands of the wrong people, in spite of the fact that it might cause his death.
Exiled two centuries ago from his Företag for insubordination and murder, Auron knows if Jimmy Mann gets his hands on that book all hell will break lose....
“Don’t scream, I won’t harm ye.” He said softly, and I realized it was that man! He moved us towards the window and pulled the curtain back slightly. I looked into the courtyard, and saw four nasty looking wolves circling under my bedroom window. He backed up taking me with him.
“Ye have to get out of here this instant; they know yer scent now.”
“They who? What the hell is going on?”
“I don’t have time to explain right now, but if ye want to live we go now.” He snapped and pulled me towards the back porch, as I hastily grabbed my kicked off shoes and a jacket. When I came out the room, I placed all I had not dropped on the hallway table, as he propelled me towards the back door.
“Where did ye park?” He whispered again, and I noticed his hazel eyes were doing that thing they did. He peered out the kitchen window, as if he were looking for someone. He pulled me onto the back porch, then bent to look directly into my eyes. He was so close; I had to bend my head back to focus on his face.
“Please tell me you are not…about to go all wolfie?” I hissed, and he smiled at that.
“Not yet, tis the moon.” He grinned and we both looked up.
Sure enough, it was a full moon.
“Ok now what? How the hell do you propose we get to my car with wolves staking us out? My god, this sucks. I’m a junior high school teacher. This is the stuff I tell my students do not exist. Wolves do not just eat people. I am not little red riding hood!” I screeched looking out over my back yard.
“Those arena wolves luve and we have to make a run for it. Since it's a full moon, I obviously canna drive.” He stated grinning again as he put his hands up, and it was as if all at once the stark handsomeness of his face hit me. He had shoulder length sable hair, a very angular strong chin, hazel eyes, which were greener than any other color, thick dark brows, and what looked like a five o’clock shadow. His body was ripped with toned muscles, and he had to be well over six feet. I also noticed he spoke with a sort of British/ Scot’s accent.
“Ok luve, just how do we do that? They’ll eat me alive before I reach it.”
“That is why I shall be yer distraction. The minute I jump this back fence they’ll take off after me, tis a smell thing. It gives ye ample enough time to chip wit it for the motor, circle round and pick me up just beyond that point.” He countered pointing to some trees on the other side of the small bluff.
Great…just great. Terrace Drive was a bitch to navigate at night!
“Okay, but I betta make it to that car. Cuz if I don’t I swear, I’ll come back and haunt cho ass for all eternity.” I retorted and his grin only widened.
“Ye will luve. Although the prospect of ye haunting me for all eternity I’m well up for, but let’s just leave that till later.” He teased, then winked. “Are ye ready then?” He asked and I nodded. He grabbed me and kissed me full on the lips again. My face registered my shock.
“For good luck, not to mention I need some inspiration here. Off with ye then.” He said, winked at me again; then jumped over the rail.
I heard the howl of a wolf, then running, both paws and feet. My adrenaline started to pump as I took off for the front door, grabbing my purse as I ran. I cleared the two flights of stairs in record time, shot across the street; then dropped my keys as I tried to turn them in the lock. As I opened the door, I heard it. That same fucken growl from before, and glanced to the side of me. Maybe if I stayed very still, it would just go away.
